आगामी सिंहस्थ कुंभमेळ्याच्या पार्श्वभूमीवर तपोवन परिसरातील वृक्षतोडीचा मुद्दा चिघळत चालला आहे. विकासकामे, साधुग्रामची उभारणी आणि कुंभनगरीच्या नियोजनाच्या नावाखाली होणाऱ्या वृक्षतोडीविरोधात पर्यावरणप्रेमी, नागरिक आणि सामाजिक संघटनांकडून तीव्र नाराजी व्यक्त केली जात आहे. अशा परिस्थितीत नाशिक महापालिकेने आता साधू-महंत आणि प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तींच्या माध्यमातून प्रत्युत्तर देण्याची भूमिका घेतल्याचे दिसून येत आहे.

अखिल भारतीय वैष्णव आखाड्यांचे महंत व कुंभमेळा प्रवक्ते भक्तीचरणदास महाराज यांनी तपोवनातील वृक्षतोडीचे समर्थन करत आंदोलकांना संयम राखण्याचा सल्ला दिला आहे. झाडे वाचवण्याच्या नावाखाली साधू-महंतांविषयी चुकीची विधाने करू नयेत, असा इशाराही त्यांनी दिला. (Tapovan tree cutting Controversy Nashik)

दरम्यान, तपोवनातील प्रस्तावित वृक्षतोडीला कडाडून विरोध सुरू असतानाच महापालिकेने सांडपाणी प्रक्रिया केंद्रासाठी शहरातील विविध भागात १२७० झाडांची तोड केल्याची माहिती समोर आली आहे. त्यामुळे पर्यावरणप्रेमींच्या रोषात आणखी वाढ झाली आहे. मात्र, तपोवन परिसरातील झाडे तोडण्यास राष्ट्रीय हरित लवादाने (NGT) अंतरिम स्थगिती दिल्याने सध्या तरी दिलासा मिळाला आहे. वाढता जनक्षोभ शांत करण्यासाठी कुंभमेळा मंत्री गिरीश महाजन यांच्या पुढाकारातून हैदराबाद येथून १५ हजार झाडे आणून लागवड करण्याची तयारी सुरू करण्यात आली आहे.

महापालिकेने आयोजित केलेल्या एका वृक्षारोपण कार्यक्रमात मनपा आयुक्त मनिषा खत्री, महंत भक्तीचरणदास महाराज आणि अभिनेते चिन्मय उदगीरकर यांची उपस्थिती होती. यावेळी अभिनेते चिन्मय यांनी गोदावरी नदीच्या दोन्ही काठांवर वृक्षांची तटबंदी उभारण्याची आवश्यकता अधोरेखित केली. या कार्यक्रमातील महंत भक्तीचरणदास महाराज यांचे भाषण महापालिकेच्या अधिकृत समाजमाध्यमांवर प्रसारित करण्यात आले.

भाषणादरम्यान महंत भक्तीचरणदास महाराज यांनी मनपा आयुक्त मनिषा खत्री यांच्या कार्याचे कौतुक करत नाशिक अधिक हरित करण्यासाठी त्या प्रयत्नशील असल्याचे सांगितले. नाशिकमध्ये कुंभमेळा होणे ही गौरवाची बाब असून साधुग्राम तपोवनमध्येच उभारले जाते, असे त्यांनी स्पष्ट केले.

२०१५ च्या कुंभमेळ्यावेळी या परिसरात मोठ्या प्रमाणावर झाडे नव्हती. मोकळ्या जागेत पावसाळ्यानंतर नैसर्गिकरीत्या झाडे वाढली. मात्र, पावसाळ्यात होणाऱ्या कुंभमेळ्यासाठी तंबू उभारणे आवश्यक असल्याने जागेची सफाई करावी लागते, असा युक्तिवाद त्यांनी मांडला. (Tapovan tree cutting Controversy Nashik)

२०२७ चा कुंभमेळा भव्यदिव्य व्हावा यासाठी मर्यादित स्वरूपातील वृक्षतोड अपरिहार्य असल्याचे मत त्यांनी व्यक्त केले. जुनी व महत्त्वाची झाडे जतन केली जातील, तसेच हटविण्यात येणारी झाडे पुनर्लावली जातील किंवा पर्यायी ठिकाणी नवीन वृक्ष लागवड केली जाईल, असा विश्वासही त्यांनी दिला.

The controversy surrounding tree cutting in the Tapovan area has intensified ahead of the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Environmentalists, citizens, and social organizations are strongly opposing the cutting of trees in the name of development works, Sadhu Gram construction, and Kumbh city planning. Amid rising protests, the Nashik Municipal Corporation appears to be countering the opposition with the support of saints, mahants, and public figures.

Akhil Bharatiya Vaishnav Akhada Mahant and Kumbh Mela spokesperson Bhakticharandas Maharaj defended the tree cutting at Tapovan and urged protestors to maintain restraint. Meanwhile, while protests against Tapovan tree cutting continue, it has come to light that the municipal corporation has cut 1,270 trees across various parts of the city for a sewage treatment project, further fuelling public anger. However, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has currently imposed an interim stay on tree cutting in Tapovan, offering temporary relief.

At a tree plantation event organized by the municipal corporation, Municipal Commissioner Manisha Khatri, Mahant Bhakticharandas Maharaj, and actor Chinmay Udgirkar were present. Actor Chinmay emphasized the need for creating green buffers along both banks of the Godavari River. The speech of Mahant Bhakticharandas was later circulated on the corporation’s official social media platforms.

During his address, Bhakticharandas Maharaj praised Commissioner Manisha Khatri for her efforts toward making Nashik greener. He stated that hosting the Kumbh Mela in Nashik is a matter of pride and that Sadhu Gram has traditionally been established at Tapovan.

Referring to the 2015 Kumbh Mela, he said the area earlier had very few trees and that most vegetation grew naturally after the monsoon. As the Kumbh Mela is held during the rainy season, tents are essential for saints to reside, which necessitates clearing certain areas.

He stressed that limited tree cutting is unavoidable to ensure a grand and well-organized Kumbh Mela in 2027. Older and significant trees will be preserved, while affected trees will be replanted or replaced at alternative locations to maintain Nashik’s green cover.
