नवी दिल्ली : महाराष्ट्राचा सर्वोच्च नागरी सन्मान ‘महाराष्ट्र भूषण’ पुरस्काराने गौरविण्यात आलेले ज्येष्ठ व जागतिक कीर्तीचे शिल्पकार राम सुतार यांचे निधन झाले आहे. वयाच्या 100 व्या वर्षी त्यांनी अखेरचा श्वास घेतला. उत्तर प्रदेशातील नोएडा येथील त्यांच्या निवासस्थानी बुधवारी (17 डिसेंबर) मध्यरात्रीनंतर त्यांचे निधन झाले. त्यांच्या निधनाने शिल्पकलेतील चालता-बोलता इतिहास हरपल्याची भावना कला क्षेत्रातून व्यक्त केली जात आहे.

राम सुतार यांच्या पश्चात पुत्र अनिल सुतार, सुना व नातवंडे असा परिवार आहे. त्यांच्यावर आज (18 डिसेंबर) सकाळी 11 वाजता अंत्यसंस्कार करण्यात येणार आहेत. अंत्ययात्रा सेक्टर 19, A2, नोएडा येथून निघून सेक्टर 94, सुपरनोव्हा इमारतीजवळ थांबणार असल्याची माहिती पुत्र अनिल सुतार यांनी दिली. सहा दशकांहून अधिक काळ शिल्पकलेला समर्पित आयुष्यात राम सुतार यांनी 200 हून अधिक भव्य शिल्पांची निर्मिती केली. त्यांची शिल्पकृती भारतासह जगभरात पाहायला मिळते. पंतप्रधान नरेंद्र मोदी यांच्या संकल्पनेतील सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल यांचा ‘स्टॅच्यू ऑफ युनिटी’ हा त्यांच्या कारकिर्दीतील मैलाचा दगड मानला जातो. पंडित जवाहरलाल नेहरू, सरदार पटेल, गोविंद वल्लभ पंत, महात्मा गांधी यांच्यासह अनेक थोर नेत्यांचे पुतळे राम सुतार यांच्या हातातून साकारले. मुंबईतील इंदू मिल परिसरातील भारतरत्न डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर यांच्या स्मारकाचे कामही त्यांच्या मार्गदर्शनाखाली सुरू होते. मात्र, ते पूर्ण होण्याआधीच काळाने त्यांच्यावर घाला घातला.

शिल्पकलेतील अतुलनीय योगदानासाठी त्यांना 1999 मध्ये पद्मश्री, 2016 मध्ये पद्मभूषण आणि 2024 मध्ये महाराष्ट्र भूषण पुरस्काराने सन्मानित करण्यात आले होते. 15 नोव्हेंबर 2025 रोजी मुख्यमंत्री देवेंद्र फडणवीस आणि उपमुख्यमंत्री एकनाथ शिंदे यांनी त्यांच्या नोएडा येथील निवासस्थानी जाऊन हा पुरस्कार प्रदान केला होता. 1925 साली धुळे जिल्ह्यातील गोंदूर गावात एका गरीब सुतार कुटुंबात राम सुतार यांचा जन्म झाला. गुरु श्रीराम जोशी यांनी त्यांच्यातील कला ओळखून त्यांना मुंबईतील सर जे. जे. स्कूल ऑफ आर्टमध्ये प्रवेश घेण्यासाठी प्रेरित केले. तेथेच त्यांची प्रतिभा फुलली आणि मॉडेलिंगसाठी त्यांना मेयो सुवर्णपदक मिळाले. कांस्य धातूच्या ओतकामावर त्यांचे विशेष प्रभुत्व होते.

जागतिक कीर्तीचे शिल्पकार राम सुतार यांना ‘महाराष्ट्र भूषण ’ पुरस्कार – दिल्ली येथे सन्मान

New Delhi : Veteran sculptor Ram Sutar, one of the most celebrated artists in the world and recipient of Maharashtra’s highest civilian honour, the Maharashtra Bhushan Award, passed away at the age of 100. He breathed his last at his residence in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, late Wednesday night (December 17). His demise marks the end of an era in Indian sculpture. (Ram Sutar Pass Away)

Ram Sutar is survived by his son Anil Sutar, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. His last rites will be performed on Thursday (December 18) at 11 AM. The funeral procession will begin from Sector 19, A2, Noida, and conclude near the Supernova building in Sector 94.

Over a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, Ram Sutar created over 200 monumental sculptures, many of which are installed across India and abroad. His most iconic creation is the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, depicting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (Ram Sutar Pass Away)

He sculpted statues of legendary leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Govind Ballabh Pant, and Mahatma Gandhi. Several statues of Mahatma Gandhi across India and foreign countries bear his artistic imprint. He also sculpted statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and Mahatma Jyotiba Phule across the world. The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar memorial at Indu Mill in Mumbai was being developed under his guidance.

For his immense contribution to art, Ram Sutar was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999, Padma Bhushan in 2016, and the Maharashtra Bhushan Award in 2024. Born in 1925 in Gondur village of Dhule district, Maharashtra, he rose from humble beginnings to become a global icon in sculpture. He was trained at Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, where he won the prestigious Mayo Gold Medal.
